Safety Update

Spartans,

As we approach the end of the Spring 2025 semester, the Norfolk State University Police Department has implemented the following safety protocols in wake of the recent on campus shooting on Saturday, April 19, 2025Unfortunately, it is a sad reality in this nation that we live in violent times. In the past week, several higher education institutions across the country have responded to serious incidents due to gun violence. This is not acceptable, and we must do better as a society to de-escalate conflict peacefully. These measures are for the safety of the entire NSU community and will require each of us to do our part to maintain NSU’s Culture of Care across campus. The NSU leadership requests for Spartans (faculty, students, staff) to follow and be advised of the following protocols while on university grounds:

  • Student and employee identification cards must always be present and visible in campus facilities
  • All vehicles must have proper decals to enter and park on campus
  • All visitor parking must have proper decals/signage via the NSU Parking Office
  • Entry to campus gates will be limited to Gate #1 from 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Review all Campus Announcements

In addition, to maintain safety across campus, the NSU Police Department has taken the following measures:

  • NSU Police have increased the frequency of walking patrols with assistance from the Norfolk Police Department and Norfolk Sheriff’s Office
  • Held safety meetings with students and Student Government Association leadership
  • Plan to install additional cameras across campus grounds
  • Deployed officers on off-road vehicles and bike patrols
  • Added additional vehicles to the NSUPD patrol fleet
  • Re-disseminated active shooter/run-hide-fight protocols to the campus community
  • Re-disseminated and encouraged students, faculty, and staff to download the NSU Safe app

As we move into the next academic year, NSUPD plans to hire additional officers, provide additional training opportunities for current personnel, and purchase two additional mobile police surveillance cameras. In addition, NSU Facilities Management will begin the installation of an exterior fence that will surround most of the campus before the end of the year.

In closing, the safety of the NSU community is our top priority. However, safety also begins with each of us individually. If you see something, say something. The NSU Police Department can be reached anytime at 757-823-8102.
