Norfolk State Wins Second Consecutive Talmadge Layman Hill Men's All-Sports Award
The Norfolk State Athletics Department has earned the Talmadge Layman Hill Men's Sports Award for the 2024-25 academic year, bestowed to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) school with the most success across all men's athletic programs.
The recognition marked Norfolk State's second consecutive all-sports accolade, and third in a four-year span. The Spartans have now received the Talmadge Layman Hill Award 14 times - more than any other school in the conference.
“Congratulations to Norfolk State University, including President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb, and the entire athletic department for winning the 2025 Talmadge Layman Hill Men's All-Sports Award,” MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills said.
Howard University took the Mary McLeod Bethune Women's All-Sports Award, presented to the top-performing athletics department on the women's side. Both schools were presented with a $20,000 check at the award ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Norfolk State won the 2025 Talmadge Layman Hill Award tally by a comfortable margin, finishing the year with 46 points. South Carolina State placed second with 35.5 points, while North Carolina Central (32 points) followed closely behind in third.
The Spartans received crucial boosts in the standings by winning the MEAC Championship in four of the six men's sports offered by the conference for the 2024-25 academic year. Norfolk State brought home conference titles in cross country, indoor track and field, basketball, and outdoor track and field.
Norfolk State made a significant push to contend for the women's all-sports award as well, finishing just 8.5 points behind the first-place Bison. The Spartans won two MEAC Championships on the women's side during the 2024-25 academic year: cross country and basketball.
The Men's MEAC All-Sports Award is named after the late Talmadge Layman Hill, a former player and coach at Morgan State, and former chairman of the MEAC Steering and Planning Committee, as well as the conference's first President.
