Free Stats Boot Camp—Aug. 11‒15
$1500 Stipend!
Calling All NSU Students Interested in Improving Their Skills in Statistics and Research Methods!
The NSU College of Liberal Arts is partnering with the University of Michigan’s Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program in Quantitative Methods to offer an exciting summer experience designed to help all NSU students, regardless of their major, develop their skills in quantitative methods. There is no cost to participate.
The summer stats boot camp is a three-week summer program—two weeks of online instruction followed by one week of in-person learning at NSU—where students will learn how to enhance their research impact through comprehensive training in statistics, data analysis, and quantitative methods. Students will receive advanced training on SPSS and on Stata. The program will focus on three key areas: Categorical Regression, Linear Regression, and Multilevel Regression.
Participants will receive several incentives, including a $1,500 stipend, use of a laptop computer, complimentary on-campus room and board, box lunches, and free course materials for the duration of the program. The asynchronous online program begins July 28, which provides instruction in math and computing concepts connected to quantitative methods. The 1-week onsite program runs from August 11 to August 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Brown Memorial Hall.
Students interested in improving their skills in statistics and in research methods as they prepare for fall classes are especially encouraged to register. Research posits that up to 80 percent of college students experience some form of statistical anxiety. Many fearful students spend their entire academic career trying to avoid higher-level math, statistics, and quantitative methods by choosing majors they believe are devoid of calculations.
There are probably two main reasons. First, statistical phobia is prevalent, even among well-educated people. Even basic math can generate a lot of anxiety and visceral dislike. Second, basic statistics are often taught in a way that is dull and tedious. The stats boot camp will help students combat these issues.
Please note that there are only 50 slots available, and they are filling up quickly. The registration deadline is July 25, 2025, at 5 p.m. Undergraduate participants who actively participate in the boot camp and its activities will receive a stipend of $1500 shortly after the boot camp concludes.
