In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and National Poetry Month, Norfolk State University proudly presents Blue Genes & Teal Pop-Up Poetry: Denim Day 2024, a poignant event hosted by the OVW Campus Prevention & Response Program, CIVPER- Campus Interpersonal Violence Prevention, Education & Response Program and Norfolk State University Counseling Center.

About
Denim Day originated from a powerful movement sparked by a landmark case in Italy in the 1990s. In solidarity with sexual assault survivors, individuals wore denim jeans as a symbol of protest victim-blaming and in support of survivors' rights. This year, OVW Campus Prevention & Response Program continues this tradition, inviting our campus community to wear "Blue Jeans" in solidarity of sexual assault prevention.

Join us in the student center lobby on April 24th from 12–3 p.m. to commemorate this important day. We will have poetry reading pop-ups, discussions on fostering a safe and consent-informed campus community, and resources available for the campus community. This event is an opportunity to stand together, raise awareness, promote a culture of support, empowerment and use your VOICE!

OVW Campus Prevention & Response Program
Dr. Tonya M. Shell, Program Director of the OVW Campus Prevention & Response Program, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, "Denim Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of standing with survivors and challenging harmful attitudes towards sexual assault. By coming together as a community, we can create a culture of respect, support, and empowerment." The event carries the title Blue Genes & Teal Pop-Up Poetry Demin Day 2024 and encourages all attendees, as a symbol of solidarity, to take the pledge “ Start by Believing.” Don't miss this chance to make a difference. Wear your denim jeans, join the conversation, and act against sexual violence. Let's start by believing and end the cycle of silence together. Resources and information about campus and community services will be made available.
